Prof. Dr. Edmundo Balsemão Pires

Edmundo Balsemão Pires obtained the title of Agregação (Habilitation) in Philosophy in 2006 at the University of Coimbra, a Ph. D. in 1999, and a Master’s Degree in Contemporary Philosophy in 1990. He developed research activities as a DAAD Research Fellow in 1994-95 at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum (Hegel-Archiv) and as an FCG Fellow in 1996 at the same institution (RUB). He obtained an FCT Scholarship (as a Sabbatical Scholar) in 2010 to further his research at the Max-Planck Institut für Europäische Rechtsgeschichte in Frankfurt am Main. He is currently a Full Professor at the University of Coimbra. Published as a single author, 12 book(s), edited/co-edited 9 books, published as single author 57 articles in specialized journals and 23 book chapters (until 2025). Organized, co-organized or participated as member of scientific committees in 23 event(s). As speaker gave talks in 71 scientific events. Supervised 3 concluded post-doctoral research projects and 1 concluded doctoral thesis(s). Supervised 7 concluded master’s dissertation(s). As a researcher joined 2 project(s) and was the principal researcher in 3 group project(s), associated with the R&D unit L.I.F. – “Language, Interpretation and Philosophy”, as a group coordinator. Along his career and until 2025, taught more than 100 courses in Licenciatura/Mestrado (Bachelor/Masters Degrees) on Social and Political Philosophy, Philosophy of Media (Masters Degree), Seminar on Philosophy I and II, Philosophy of Language, Modern Philosophy, Philosophy of Law, and Aesthetics, among others. He developed administrative activities as Coordinator of the Philosophy Section of the Department of Philosophy, Information and Communication at FL/UC and director of the 1st., 2nd., and 3rd. cycle courses in Philosophy of the same Department.
