From the ‘enlightenment of the common man’ until the ‘need of philosophy’: the Young Hegel’s Formation.
This research aims to investigate the relationship between Hegel’s project as a schoolboy — an enlightenment of the common man, humbly sketched in a diary entry from 1786 — and the aspiration expressed fourteen years later, when he was about to move to Jena, of accomplishing a scientific philosophical system. The core of this research is a conceptual and historical analysis of Hegel’s texts and fragments from 1786 to 1800, thus encompassing his path from Stuttgart to Frankfurt. The results of this analysis shall shed light on what was left behind and what remains in the passage from Hegel’s ideal of an enlightenment of the common man to the first outlines of his philosophical system. Two questions will thus guide this endeavor: 1) To what extent is the birth of Hegel’s philosophical thought driven by a project of enlightening the common man? 2) How much of this project remains after the announcement of his “conversion” to science? The provisional hypotheses are: a) The young Hegel grounds his project in the diagnosis that enlightenment, when restricted to the understanding (Verstand), creates social divisions that threaten the established social order. b) The core response to this tendency is to develop a complex and sophisticated project of a new sociability — first through a popular religion, and later through a Philosophy of Right.
