“Philosophical thinking is tantamount to thinking in models; negative dialectics is an ensemble of model analyses.” In his magnum opus *Negative Dialectics*, published in 1966, Theodor W. Adorno thus introduces a philosophical program aimed at overcoming the coercive power of the concept by immersing itself in the object. In its unfolding through models, negative dialectics seeks both to oppose a formalistic mode of thinking and to resist the reductive appropriation of theory by practice. In this context, the dialectic is also elaborated through a critique of classical German philosophy, as well as an initially paradoxical attempt to reclaim metaphysics through materialism. The dense, paratactic style of writing makes reading itself a demanding intellectual task, which we would like to explore together in this workshop. Following an introductory session devoted to the central part of the book, we will focus on a discussion of the third part, which consists of three models dealing respectively with moral philosophy, the philosophy of history, and metaphysics. The work is permeated by the question of the possibility of philosophy in the wake of the historical catastrophes of the 20th century. Sixty years after its publication, it is by no means self-evident whether we are rising to the theoretical and practical challenges it identifies. Taking up Adorno’s reference to Kant and Hegel, we should therefore not ask what in Adorno is still significant for the present, but what our present means for Adorno.
