Sixty years ago, Theodor W. Adorno’s Negative Dialectics was published. As Adorno notes in a postscript at the end of the book, three lectures he delivered in French at the Collège de France in 1961 form the “core” of his preparatory work. Among the audience at the time were Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Jean Wahl, whose Heideggerian leanings the lectures explicitly target. The event focuses on these three lectures and their context, particularly the third lecture titled “Vers une dialectique négative.” In cooperation with the Centre Marc Bloch, the origins and reception of these interventions will be discussed in German, English, and French, drawing on previously unpublished passages. In this way, the genesis and positioning of Negative Dialectics within contemporary discourse will be illuminated.
